Wednesday's Hero

This Weeks Post Was Suggested By Michael

Cpl. Lloyd Oliver
Cpl. Lloyd Oliver
88 years old from Glendale, Arizona
April 23, 1923 - March 16, 2011
U.S. Marines

"Am I a hero? I don't know. Yeah. I'll be a hero. I'll go for that. Yeah."

Wednesday Hero profiled the Code Talkers way back in 2005. But this week it is honoring Cpl. Lloyd Oliver. Cpl. Oliver was one of the original 29 Navajo Code Talkers. He joined the Marines in 1942 at the age of 19 because he wanted to serve his country. Which he did, proudly, for three years. In 2001 he received the Congressional Gold Medal for being one of the original 29 Navajo Code Talkers. He passed away on March 16 of pancreatitis. Cpl. Oliver was only one of two remaining original Navajo Code Talkers.

Not only have we lost a great man, a brave man, but a piece of history is another step closer to being gone forever. We must keep them, and their place in it, alive for future generations.

You can read more about Cpl. Lloyd Oliver here and here.

These brave men and women sacrifice so much in their lives so that others may enjoy the freedoms we get to enjoy everyday. For that, I am proud to call them Hero.
We Should Not Only Mourn These Men And Women Who Died, We Should Also Thank God That Such People Lived

Ask Captain Dramatic

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Sunday dinner in our house is usually a big meal, as it is one of the few that all three of us get to sit down and eat together, and we rarely have to run off to this meeting or that event afterward.

Tonight I made pot roast and vegetables, and served it with bread and salad. Both my husband and my son were enthusiastic about meal, and before the first helpings were finished were already talking about left overs and lunches for tomorrow.

CD: (said with a grin) "You do remember that you said that all of the leftovers are for my lunches this week right?"
Dad-E: No, but I do remember saying that you are grounded until you are 45.
CD: Well, then I might be able to share some of it.
Dad-E: Then I might be able to reduce that to 40.
CD: In that case, they are all mine.
Dad-E: I guess now it is 50.
CD: Hey! You can only ground me until I am 18.
Dad-E: (looking at me) I don't think I remember him having a Wii. Do you?
Me: No, I don't think so.

At this point we were all laughing, and the banter continued a little longer, and involved laptops, and other items changing hands and ownership.

It feels good to make dinners they banter over having to share with each other.

Friday Funny

A big news story was just breaking, fires on the local hillside. The photographer for a big city newspaper quickly used a cell phone to call the local airport to charter a flight. He was told a twin-engine plane would be waiting for him at the airport. Arriving at the airfield, he spotted a plane warming up outside a hanger. He jumped in with his bag, slammed the door shut, and shouted,

"Let's go". The pilot taxied out, swung the plane into the wind and took off. Once in the air, the photographer instructed the pilot,

"Fly over the valley and make low passes so I can take pictures of the fires on the hillsides."

"Why?" asked the pilot.

"Because I'm a photographer for the paper," he responded. "And I need to get some close up shots." The pilot was strangely silent for a moment, finally he stammered,

"So, what you're telling me, is you're NOT my flight instructor?"

Proof That It takes A Village

Captain Dramatic recently tested for his red belt-white stripe in Tae Kwon Do. This moment has been long awaited for the whole family as for a time, we weren't sure we were going to see this day.

Some time ago, Captain Dramatic was at a stage in his life where bad decisions were running rampant. Captain Dramatic stole something, and by doing so, was so far from observing and living by the tenants of Taw Kwon Do, that his instructor, with me in total agreement, decided it was best that he start over as a white belt. At the time, Captain Dramatic had just made it to achieving his blue belt-black stripe (the belt just before his most recently acquired). He was not pleased with having to start over.

When he learned that he would be starting all over, he stated that he no longer wanted to learn Tae Kwon Do, but I was having none of that. I told him that he had to make it back to his blue belt-black stripe before I would allow him to decide he wasn't going to continue. After all, this was an activity that he loved before being made to start at the beginning, and if I allowed him to quit he would learn nothing.

He complained nightly for weeks, but I didn't let him get away with that either. I reminded him that he had done this to himself by making the wrong choices. I told him that he could make the best of the situation, or the worst of it, but that either way it wasn't going to change, and that he would only be making life harder on himself. He tried to make the situation miserable for a time I am sure, but he eventually stopped complaining when he knew it wasn't getting him anywhere, but reminded of his bad decision and sent to his room.

He has since made a lot of changes and done some growing. Not all his decisions are good ones, but most of them are better ones. Not all of his behavior is exemplary, but he has come leaps and bounds from where he was years ago. I would never give up on him, but now there are fewer challenges for us over all. Don't get me wrong, we still have our moments when I have no idea how I am going to get through to him, and there are still arguments and tests of patience, but we trudge right along. It helps that I have an amazing support network, who has proven time and time again, that it does take a village to raise a child.

To all those on the forefront of the battle to raise this son I gave birth to, thank you. Captain Dramatic may not realize it, but this board breaking ceremony wasn't just for him. It was for all of you, because it shows a measure of success on your part. It shows that dedication to a child, and even sometimes, just being more stubborn than said child, does pay off.

Thank you to my mom, and dad, who remind me how much my son and I have in common, and urged me to try martial arts in an effort to help my son down the right path. Who were always there support me in everything I attempted to do, and still are. Who reinforce lessons I try to teach my son.

Thank you to my husband who is a man who volunteered to help raise a child that has become his in every way but blood. Anyone who volunteers for this three ring circus complete with side show, that I call my life, is very special indeed.

Thank you to Sir who never gives up, who is willing to try everything in his power to help his students, their parents, and his community. He leads by example, and is exceptional at being open-minded, fair, respectful of others, and compassionate. He holds his students accountable for their actions, and helps them reach goals that many may not have known were within their reach.

I thank mom, dad, husband, and sir, for holding me up when it got to be too much, and for holding me back when strangulation was on my mind. Thank you for helping me to reinforce morals, goals, and citizenship. Most importantly, thank you for letting me know that I wasn't alone in the fight, and not the only one who cared for my monster. He will remember all of this, and I know for fact that, because his heart is ultimately good, he will one day thank us for our efforts, care and concern. It may be a while before we see this, but I know it will happen.

I will leave you with this video of Captain Dramatic breaking an inch and a half of pine board. As you watch it, try and think of it as I do, as a thank you to those who have given so much of themselves to help my young man find the right path, and as a symbol of the difficulties he has overcome.

There will be more difficulties on his path to adulthood I am sure, but I truly think he is going to make it. Especially if he remembers what he has learned.

Student Oath:
I shall observe the tenants of Tae Kwon Do.
I shall respect my instructors and seniors.
I shall never misuse Tae Kwon Do.
I shall be a champion of freedom and justice.
I shall build a more peaceful world.

The Tenants of Tae Kwon Do:
Courtesy
Integrity
Perseverance
Self Control
Indomitable Spirit

As a side note, I have had honesty and integrity down pat for a while, but Captain Dramatic's instruction in Tae Kwon Do has taught me something about my indomitable spirit, and about perseverance as well. In some things my self-control still needs some work... ;)

Friday Funny

The Shredder

A young engineer was leaving the office at 6.45 p.m. when he found the Managing Director standing in front of a shredder with a piece of paper in his hand.

"Listen," said the Managing Director, "this is a very sensitive and important document, and my secretary is not here. Can you make this thing work?"

"Certainly," said the young engineer. He turned the machine on, inserted the paper, and pressed the start button.

"Excellent, excellent!" said the Managing Director as his paper disappeared inside the machine, "I just need one copy."

Local Failures

I thought I would share these with you. They are pictures showing some pretty funny fails that happened here locally.

The first is from last summer. It was a sign placed outside our local garden shop and nursery.

Now, I am positive that they were referring to flower pots, and not the illegal plant often smoked, but perhaps they should have made sure to specify as they are a place where plants can be purchased.

The next is actually from a web site displaying homes that are for sale in this area.

Unfortunately, the sale price for the house being listed in the picture above is not easily visible in this photo, so you will have to take my word for it. The Realtor has listed the house at $54,300,000.00. I am not even sure that movie stars spend that kind of money on their houses in Hollywood, but if they are, I can guarantee they are getting more than a 1222 square foot, 33 year old home, with 1 story, 3 bedrooms, and two baths, on .28 acres. The price per square foot on this home is listed at $44,435.35.

Just some silly stuff I thought I would share.

Captain Dramatic Breaks Another Board

I am bit late in getting this posted, partly because with took our camera, but forgot the memory card (DOH!). One of the other students grandmother was kind enough to video it for us, and provide us a copy.

Captain Dramatic is now a blue belt-back stripe, and has been since December. He will be testing next week for his red belt-white stripe, but here is the video from his board breaking ceremony in December.

As you can see, her has gotten very tall, and will pass me up soon. He turned 12 in January.

Friday Funny

This Friday's Funny:

THE ZIPPER

A MAN WALKED INTO A SUPERMARKET WITH HIS ZIPPER DOWN.

A LADY CASHIER WALKED UP TO HIM AND SAID, "YOUR BARRACKS DOOR IS OPEN." THIS NOT BEING A PHRASE THAT THE MAN HAD HEARD, HE WENT ON HIS WAY LOOKING A BIT PUZZLED.

WHEN HE WAS ABOUT DONE SHOPPING, A MAN CAME UP AND SAID, "YOUR FLY IS OPEN." HE ZIPPED UP AND FINISHED HIS SHOPPING.

AT THE CHECKOUT, HE INTENTIONALLY GOT IN THE LINE WHERE THE LADY WAS THAT TOLD HIM ABOUT HIS "BARRACKS DOOR."

HE WAS PLANNING TO HAVE A LITTLE FUN WITH HER, SO WHEN HE REACHED THE COUNTER HE SAID, "WHEN YOU SAW MY BARRACKS DOOR OPEN, DID YOU SEE A MARINE STANDING IN THERE AT ATTENTION?"

THE LADY THOUGHT FOR A MOMENT AND SAID, "NO, NO I DIDN'T. ALL I SAW WAS A DISABLED VETERAN SITTING ON A COUPLE OF OLD DUFFEL BAGS.

Making maple syrup is not something I would usually write about, but an article I saw today piqued my interest. The article talked about extending the sapping season with the use of a new gadget. You can read the article listed above for more information about the gadget and what it does. It was interesting, but made me realize how little I know about where and how maple syrup is made. It is something that is common place in our household, and a commodity that I think my entire family has taken for granted. We cook with it a lot by putting it in a pot of beans or adding it to a ham in the oven, we put in on pancakes and waffles, and my son will not eat sausage without maple syrup.

Many of us already knew that it was made from the sap of a maple tree, but how does it get from the tree to the plastic bottle on the kitchen table? Well, I found some great videos about the making of maple syrup that I thought I would share with you. The first couple are a family operation, the O'Biens, and they really make this look like a big party. The videos are still amateur, but they are well made. I enjoyed them.

The next video is of a different operation, with a little different method, but same basic principle.

And another operation:

Now you know, and so do I. :)

Podcasting and me? Not at this rate...

I have been mulling over the possibility of doing a podcast of my own. I would love to be able to do something on a regular basis, but so far, I haven't even been able to come up with a single topic that I think anyone will want to listen to me talk about.

I am not ready to give up yet, but I am feeling a bit discouraged. Maybe it is just that I don't have enough free time on my hands. It seems that every time I begin to think of something, I am pulled in a different direction and completely lose whatever it was that I found remotely interesting, or at least the finer points of my thoughts on the topic. I find myself wondering if maybe I had more free time on my hands, perhaps finding a topic wouldn't be so difficult. Then again, maybe it would more difficult as I may not have anything to talk about at all because I would be living an empty, boring existence. Regardless, more free time is not available, so I won't have to worry about testing either theory.

Then there are the other issues. Where am I going to store this podcast when I record it? How am I going to even tell people its out there. Editing will probably be a nightmare too. When is this house ever quiet enough for me to record? My husband has done some podcasting, so I am sure he has some, if not all, of these answers. If he does, then I am still left with the problem of what I can talk about at any length that will be interesting, and how do I make it entertaining, and different.

I know that whatever I talk about, it has to be something that I am interested in, and either already knowledgeable in, or willing to become knowledgeable in. That of course, does not guarantee that anyone else will be interested, especially when you look at the number of podcasts out there. Is there anything that hasn't already been covered by someone else? Maybe, but I haven't thought of it yet, and if I am going to compete (in a manner of speaking) with an existing show, how do I make mine different and stand out? What will make my podcast special? I keep telling myself, nothing ventured, nothing gained, but then I think, how much effort do I really want to put into something that may potentially have no listeners at all?

I guess I will kick the idea around a bit more and see if anything comes to me. Maybe I will see if the husband and Captain Dramatic will help and make it a family affair. I don't know how far I can run with that, but so far, it is the most interesting thing I have come up with. I still doesn't answer the question of what to talk about, so again, I am right back at square one. Something tells me, that figuring out what you want to talk about is probably the biggest piece of the puzzle, and none of the rest matters until you have that nailed down. It will come to me, or it won't, I just hope I am ready to write it all down before the next of life's many distractions moves in, and ruins the moment.

Can I record a podcast on how I can't think of anything to podcast on?
